In the age of COVID-19, going away on a vacation isn’t as feasible as it used to be. However, even if you’re using up your vacation days by taking a staycation this year, there are still things you can do to make that time relaxing and fun.

How to treat yourself during a staycation

    1. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep.

If you’re like a lot of people out there, the work you do can be tiring. One of the first things that you can do to enhance your staycation is to make sure that you’re getting enough sleep. Whether you prefer to sleep in or go to bed early, the important thing is that you’re doing your best to catch up on your sleep debt.

If you don’t have one already, now is a great time to start a bedtime or a morning routine. A bedtime or morning routine is essentially a way to either prepare your body for or to help it wake up from sleep. A morning routine might look like having a cup of coffee and doing a few easy yoga poses while a nighttime routine might consist of putting on pajamas, washing your face, and journaling about the day,

    2. Camp out in front of the TV or curl up with a good book.

You know that’s series you’ve been dying to binge-watch or those movies that you’ve been dying to marathon all in a row? Now’s the perfect time to do it! On the other hand, if you’re more likely to read a book than watch TV or a movie, pick up a copy of your favorite classic from your local library.

Put on comfy clothes, load up on your favorite snacks, and cuddle under some blankets because your staycation is the ideal time to spend some time catching up on your favorite form of media.

    3. Get outside during a staycation.

After your marathon is over, think about taking some time to get outside. Often, when we’re working, we don’t have enough time to spend out in the sunshine, so now is the time to soak up those rays and get some of that essential vitamin D (even if it’s cold outside!)

While there’s certainly nothing wrong with spending some time laying out and getting a tan, consider choosing an activity like running or biking to keep you busy while you’re outdoors. Even simply going for a walk is a great choice.

    4. Take up a hobby.

Whether it’s finally learning how to play a certain song on the guitar or perfecting your drawing technique, most of us have a hobby that we wish we had more time to devote to. However, while working and other life responsibilities may sometimes get in the way of being able to indulge in your favorite pastimes, your staycation is the time to concentrate on your hobbies.

Alternatively, if there is a skill or hobby that you’ve been thinking of learning about for some time, your staycation might just be the excuse you need to get into it. Give yourself permission to be a beginner and start something new.

    5. Order in your favorite takeout.

Another way to indulge while you’re vacationing from home is to order takeout from your favorite restaurant. It can be a fancy, three-course meal or your all-time favorite no-frills comfort meal. Either way, this suggestion is about treating yourself to food that would normally be considered an indulgence.

On the other hand, if ordering takeout is too much of a stretch on your wallet, challenge yourself to cook one of your favorite recipes. In either scenario, you should come out with something tasty.

    6. Reconnect with friends and family.

Often, when things get busy in our lives. we have trouble keeping up with family and friends. Even though we love them and want to keep up with the goings on in their lives, sometimes the pace of our own lives gets in the way. However, there’s no reason why you can’t take some time to reconnect during your staycation.

Send a text. Call them up on the phone. Schedule a time to video chat. Whichever method you choose, your family and friends will likely be glad to have the chance to catch up with you and learn what you have been up to for the last little while.

    7. Just relax during a staycation.

Above all, you should take the opportunity to relax during your staycation. This is your opportunity to rest and take a break from the stresses of everyday life. With that in mind, whether you find an activity like meditation relaxing or simply want to lay around on the couch, here is your permission to do whatever you need to recharge.
