Your Total Guide to 2019 Tax Deadlines
Yep, it’s that time of year again: tax season.
Confused about what is due and when for your federal taxes? Here are the dates and forms you’ll need to file quarterly installment payments, monthly payments if you work for tips, and the deadlines for filing your yearly tax returns. We’ve also added tax deadlines for U.S. citizens or resident aliens living and working — or on military duty — outside the United States and Puerto Rico.

Quarterly Tax Installment Deadlines For 2019
Due: January 15, 2019
This is the final date for 2018 estimated tax payments. Note that you shouldn’t have to make this particular payment if you file your 2018 income tax return and pay any tax due by January 31, 2019. Filing your return and paying any tax due by this date should prevent penalties for late payment of the last installment.
Due: April 15, 2019
First installment estimated tax payment for 2019.
Due: July 15, 2019
Second installment estimated tax payment for 2019.
Due: October 15, 2019
Third installment estimated tax payment for 2019.
Employees Who Work for Tips: Tax Deadlines for 2019
If you received $20 or more in tips during the previous month, you are supposed to report them to your employer.
Form: Report your tips with IRS Form 4070 (Employee’s Report of Tips to Employer)
Due: Employees must report tips to their employer by the 10th of the month after the month the tips are received. If the 10th falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, an employee may give the report to the employer by the next day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. With those rules in mind, your 2019 due dates are as follows:
- Tips earned December 2018 – Reported by January 10, 2019
- Tips earned January 2019 – Reported by February 11, 2019
- Tips earned February 2019 – Reported by March 11, 2019
- Tips earned March 2019 – Reported by April 10, 2019
- Tips earned April 2019 – Reported by May 10, 2019
- Tips earned May 2019 – Reported by June 10, 2019
- Tips earned June 2019 – Reported by July 10, 2019
- Tips earned July 2019 – Reported by August 12, 2019
- Tips earned August 2019 – Reported by September 10, 2019
- Tips earned September 2019 – Reported by October 10, 2019
- Tips earned October 2019 – Reported by November 12, 2019
- Tips earned November 2019 – Reported by December 10, 2019
Income Tax Deadlines for 2019
Forms: Forms 1040A and 1040EZ are no longer available beginning with the 2018 tax year. Individuals should file Form 1040.
April 15, 2019: Individual tax return deadline for filing your 2018 income tax return
April 17, 2019: Individual tax return deadline for filing your 2018 income tax return if you live in Maine or Massachusetts.
June 17, 2019: Federal income tax return is due for U.S. citizens or resident aliens living and working — or on military duty — outside the United States and Puerto Rico.
Extension Request: Use IRS Form 4868 if you need more time to file your tax return; you can usually get a 4-month extension. You should still pay what you estimate you owe by the due date to avoid penalties. Note: Members of the military who are stationed in a combat zone may be allowed an additional filing extension.
