Military Homeowners Insurance: Military and Veterans’ Discounts
Your home is an investment—and probably the biggest one you’ll ever make. Want to protect that investment? That’s where homeowners insurance comes in.
Designed to safeguard your home (and your finances) against weather, theft, natural disaster, or anything else that might happen along the way, homeowners insurance is a necessary part of owning a home.
Unfortunately, it can also be a costly one.
If you’re a veteran or military service member, though, you may be able to take advantage of various military-related discounts that can help reduce the cost of your military homeowners insurance premiums.
Here are the military homeowners insurance discounts we know about:
- GEICO – Up to 15 percent off your total insurance premium, plus discounts for service members currently on emergency deployment, Reserves members, and National Guard members
- Direct General – Up to 25 percent off if you’re a current service member
- Nationwide – Up to 20 percent off if you’re a member of VetFriends.com
USAA is an insurance agency aimed at only veterans and service members. You may be able to find reduced-premium policies through this organization, as well as discounted plans for your children and dependents. Companies like Progressive, State Farm, and The General also offer military discounts, though they vary by state.
Other Ways to Save on your Military Homeowners Insurance
Using your military discount is only one way to save on your military homeowners insurance. You can also bundle your insurance policies. Get your car insurance, homeowners insurance, and any other policies from the same agency. Most will give you a 10 percent discount or more just for taking out multiple policies with them.
You can also add security features to your home. The safer it is and the lower its risk of break-in or robbery, the better that is for your insurer. Consider adding a security system, cameras on your garage, a video doorbell, or even just upgraded locks and doors. Make sure to call up your insurance agency first and see what upgrades they’ll lower your premium for.
Protect your property from the elements. Most of the claims home insurers pay for are weather-related—damage due to wind, rain, hail or hurricane. Take steps to protect your home from these weather events, and your insurer will probably reward you. The less of a risk your property is, the better.
